South Africa series to test ageing Australia cricket side

Cricket analysts are questioning whether Australia's long-serving core — Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith, all now deep into their thirties — can still be considered a great team. A Test series in South Africa is framed as the decisive examination: if the ageing side wins away from home, it cements their legacy; a defeat would accelerate questions about a generational handover.
Why now: Attention is focused on whether Australia's veteran players can still deliver against strong opposition, with the South Africa series seen as a verdict on their place among the great teams.
