Lithuania offers to foot bill for a US military base
Original: Lithuania says it would pay the cost if US establishes military base
Lithuania says it would cover the costs if the United States establishes a permanent military base on its territory. The offer, reported by Reuters and defense outlets, underscores the Baltic state's push for a stronger and more enduring American troop presence as it seeks greater security guarantees amid regional tensions. Officials in Vilnius have long lobbied for a continuous US deployment, framing the cost offer as a sign of commitment rather than a barrier to hosting American forces.
Why now: Ongoing security concerns in the Baltic region are driving interest in expanded US military commitments to NATO's eastern flank.
