New York declares disaster emergency over measles outbreak
Original: New York declares first US measles disaster emergency since 2025 surge
New York has declared a disaster emergency in response to a measles outbreak, the first such declaration in the United States since the 2025 measles surge. The move gives state officials expanded powers to respond to the spread of the highly contagious virus. It signals growing official concern about measles returning to levels not seen in the US in decades.
Why now: Measles cases are rising again and the emergency declaration marks a significant escalation in the official US response.
