Democrats move to change California's recall process
Original: Schwarzenegger became governor through a recall. Democrats want to change the process
California Democrats are pushing to change the state's recall process, the same mechanism that brought Arnold Schwarzenegger into the governor's office in 2003. Supporters of reform argue the system allows a minority of voters to oust an incumbent, while critics see the effort as an attempt to shield politicians from removal. The debate is unfolding in the state legislature.
Why now: Lawmakers are actively advancing reform legislation, reopening debate over a process that famously removed a sitting governor.
