Brazil presidential race heads to second round with Flávio Bolsonaro leading Lula

Original: Brazil’s presidential race goes to second round as Flávio Bolsonaro leads incumbent Lula

Brazil's presidential election will go to a second round after far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, outperformed expectations and led incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first-round vote. Lula described the result as 'unexpected', and the country now heads to a run-off that could decide whether the incumbent secures another term.

Why now: The stronger-than-expected first-round result for Flávio Bolsonaro has upended expectations and put Brazil's political future in doubt ahead of the run-off.
