Google data center water and electricity use revealed by flawed redaction
Original: Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
A botched redaction in documents about Google's Lincoln, Nebraska data center has exposed figures on the facility's water and electricity consumption, which officials had attempted to withhold. Local reporting from 1011now says the release leaves residents with 'more questions than answers' about the project's resource demands, renewing debate over secrecy around data center deals between tech companies and city governments.
Why now: Large language model and cloud expansion is driving scrutiny of data centers' resource use, and the accidental disclosure of figures officials tried to hide made the story timely.
