NASA's Curiosity rover has returned new Mastcam imagery from Mars, covering sols 5028 to 5032 of its mission. The images, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS, have been assembled into a high-resolution mosaic and made viewable as an interactive GIGAmacro panorama, letting the public zoom into Martian terrain in fine detail.

Researchers have reported the first plasmid found in Halovibrio, a salt-loving bacterium, showing a mosaic genome shaped by extensive gene exchange among microbes living in hypersaline brines. The finding sheds light on how horizontal gene transfer drives adaptation in extreme salty environments, and it is drawing attention from microbiologists interested in extremophile evolution and the genetic tools these organisms carry.

The news, reported by the BBC, has prompted local concern about the loss of a green and artistic community asset. Critics are questioning whether the development justifies removing a project valued by residents.
