In Arctic communities, Inuit bear guards are patrolling and protecting residents as polar bears range closer to settlements. Melting sea ice is forcing bears to spend more time on land in search of food, increasing encounters with people. The guards, drawing on local knowledge, monitor bear activity and help keep both residents and the animals safe as conditions change.
