Inuit bear guards protect Arctic communities as climate changes
Original: In a warming Arctic, Inuit bear guards protect communities https:// grist.org/indigenous/in-a-warm ing-arctic-inuit-bear
In Canada's Arctic, trained Inuit bear guards are protecting communities from increasingly frequent polar bear encounters as warming temperatures push the animals into new areas. The program combines traditional Indigenous knowledge with specialized training, helping residents adapt to a changing landscape where polar bears now appear near settlements more often.
Why now: Climate change is driving polar bears closer to Arctic communities, drawing attention to Indigenous-led safety and adaptation efforts
