Engineers in Singapore have built ALBATROSS, a robot weighing about one kilogram that is dropped from a drone at roughly 150 metres. It spins its limbs to slow its fall from around 110 to 24 km/h, then transforms into a small sailboat steered by a fish-like rudder. The machine runs on just three actuators and three sensors, impressing observers with how much capability is packed into such a simple design.
- 2Albatross Robot Falls, Spins, Self-Rights, and Sails AwayβΌMeet Albatross: It Falls, Spins, Self-Rights, and Sails Away Like a Leaf
Engineers have unveiled Albatross, a small robotics platform designed to be dropped from height. Instead of breaking, it tumbles like a falling leaf, automatically rights itself after landing, and then travels away across terrain. The design highlights growing interest in passive, bio-inspired locomotion for cheap, disposable robots that can be scattered into hard-to-reach areas.

A new PNAS study fed more than three decades of black-browed albatross records into an evolutionary model, allowing traits such as wing length, breeding timing and behavior to change as the climate warms. The results show that so-called evolutionary rescue can extend the species' survival under mild warming, but that strong warming overwhelms this adaptive capacity, raising concerns about the long-term future of albatross populations.
- 4Jordan Smith holes remarkable albatross for Shot of the DayβJordan Smithβs amazing albatross is the Shot of the Day
English golfer Jordan Smith produced an albatross β three shots on a single hole β that has been named the PGA Tour's Shot of the Day. Albatrosses are among the rarest feats in golf, rarer than a hole-in-one, which explains the buzz around the strike. Fans are sharing the highlight as one of the standout moments of the tournament week.
