Lucas Museum puts a Pikachu painting among the masterpieces
Original: Why George Lucas's new museum treats a Pikachu painting like a Rembrandt
George Lucas's new museum is giving equal weight to a painting of Pikachu and to classical works like a Rembrandt, reflecting its focus on narrative art in all forms. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art treats popular illustration and pop-culture imagery as deserving the same curatorial respect as traditional fine art, a choice that is drawing attention and debate about what counts as a museum-worthy artwork.
Why now: The provocative pairing of a Pikachu image with a Rembrandt sparks debate about the boundaries of art and museums.
