Hochvogel summit may be on the verge of collapse

Original: hochvogel

The Hochvogel, a 2,592-metre peak in the Allgäu Alps on the German-Austrian border, is reportedly beginning to break apart. Experts warn the mountain is close to a major rockfall, with a large fissure having widened over years. The situation has escalated, prompting concern for hikers and the summit cross as the anticipated collapse may have started.

Why now: Reports suggest the long-feared rockfall at the cracked Hochvogel summit may be imminent or already underway.
