Santa Catarina sees more women running for state assembly
Original: deputado estadual sc
In Santa Catarina, Brazil, the state legislative assembly noted that the proportion of women candidates running for Alesc, the state parliament, has grown compared with the previous election. The figure comes amid wider debate in Brazil about female representation in politics, where women remain a minority in state legislatures despite quota rules for party lists.
Why now: Voter interest is high ahead of elections, and rising female candidacies touch an ongoing debate about representation in Brazilian politics.
