Japan protests to US after Marine accused of murder in Okinawa
Original: Japan's Takaichi protests to US after Marine accused of murder in Okinawa
Japanese leader Sanae Takaichi has lodged a protest with the United States after a US Marine was accused of murder in Okinawa, according to Reuters. The case is likely to reignite long-standing tensions over the heavy American military presence on the island and renew calls in Japan for tighter oversight of US service members and revisions to the bilateral forces agreement.
Why now: The alleged crime by a US service member touches a sensitive, recurring friction point in Japan-US relations over Okinawa's military bases.
