UK Government Body Kept Files on Prevent Program Critics
Original: UK Government Body Kept Files on People Criticizing Prevent Program
A UK government body reportedly kept files on people who criticized the Prevent counter-extremism program, according to reporting by Reclaim The Net. The claims raise concerns about surveillance of lawful speech, with critics arguing that monitoring those who oppose a government policy by non-violent means oversteps the program's counter-terrorism mandate.
Why now: Fresh allegations of government surveillance of political critics have reignited debate over civil liberties and the Prevent program's scope.
