Original: Newsom signs law to protect immigrant crime victims in California
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law a measure designed to protect immigrant crime victims in the state. The legislation shields victims who cooperate with law enforcement from immigration consequences, reinforcing California's status as a sanctuary state. Supporters say it encourages reporting of crimes without fear of deportation, while critics argue it limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Why now: Immigration policy remains a highly contested national issue in the US, drawing attention to state-level measures.
