Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared that only two superpowers exist in the world — China and the United States — pointedly omitting Russia from the list. The remark, delivered publicly by the leader of a country traditionally seen as within Moscow's orbit, is being widely shared as a blunt swipe at Vladimir Putin and a sign of Azerbaijan's growing readiness to distance itself from the Kremlin.

Why now: A sitting leader closely tied to Russia publicly dismissed it as a superpower, a striking snub to Putin.
