A Guardian report says the night sky is growing about 10% brighter every year, driven by city lighting and poor regulation, meaning people are rapidly losing the ability to see natural darkness and stars. Commenters are sharing concerns about light pollution's impact on wildlife, human health and the shared experience of a dark sky, and calling for stronger local lighting rules.
Why now: New reporting quantifies how quickly artificial light is erasing natural darkness, striking a chord with environmental concerns.
