A Michael West article argues Australia already knows how to run public housing, pointing to Defence Housing Australia, which managed 17,353 homes as of June 2025 and posted a $23.9 million after-tax profit. The piece notes public housing makes up only around 4% of Australian housing, and backers say the DHA model shows government-built housing need not be treated as welfare.
Why now: Australia's housing affordability crisis is driving renewed debate over expanding public housing.
