US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has claimed that suicides in the American military are declining, but the family of a Navy service member is publicly demanding answers about their loved one's death. The dispute has put a spotlight on the Pentagon's handling of mental health and suicide prevention in the armed forces, and raised questions about the accuracy of official figures.
Why now: The clash between the Defence Secretary's positive claims and a grieving family's demands has drawn attention to the sensitive issue of military suicides.
