Why Courbet's "Origin of the World" Stayed Hidden for Over a Century
Original: Why Courbet's "Origin of the World" Was Hidden for Over a Century
Gustave Courbet's 1866 painting "L'Origine du monde" was kept out of public view for roughly 120 years because of its explicit realism. Owned privately — famously by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan — it was only exhibited publicly after entering the Musée d'Orsay in 1995. Commenters are revisiting how censorship and propriety shaped the artwork's strange history.
