F-Droid, the alternative app distribution platform for Android built around free and open source software, is drawing attention with its message that user freedom comes first. The project offers its own app store and distribution tools, letting users install FOSS apps outside the Play Store. Free software supporters frequently cite it as a key resource for anyone seeking to de-Google their Android device.
Why now: Interest in open source alternatives to Google's Play Store keeps F-Droid prominent in free software communities.
