Justice Alito Says He Weighs Retirement Every Year Ahead of Midterms
Original: As Midterms Near, Justice Alito Says He Considers Each Year Whether to Retire https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/03/us/poli
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito says he considers retiring each year, remarks that come as the midterm elections approach. His comments draw attention because any vacancy on the court could be filled by a president and Senate shaped by the midterm outcome, with major cases on abortion, religion and executive power still pending. Observers are weighing what the timing of his remarks means for the court's future balance.
Why now: His retirement remarks land just weeks before midterms that could determine who would replace him, raising the stakes for the Supreme Court's ideological balance.
