Lima's Fog-Oasis Tree Squeezed by Climate and Urban Sprawl
Original: Lima’s Endangered Fog-Oasis Tree Faces a Pincer of Climate Change and Sprawling City Growth
The rare fog-oasis tree of Lima, which survives on moisture captured from coastal fog, is threatened on two fronts: shifting climate patterns that reduce fog availability and the city's relentless expansion into its remaining habitat. Environmental reports highlight the species' endangered status and warn that without protection of the fragile lomas ecosystems, the tree could disappear from Peru's capital region.
Why now: New coverage of a unique endangered species is drawing attention as climate change and urban growth pressures intensify.
