EU approves passenger data agreement with South Korea

The Council of the EU gave the green light on 1 October to a PNR agreement with South Korea, expanding the international exchange of airline passenger data. Booking and travel data will be systematically transferred for counter-terrorism and law enforcement purposes. Privacy and civil liberties critics, including digital rights advocates, are voicing concern about the growing surveillance of ordinary travellers.
Why now: Civil liberties critics are alarmed by the EU's continued expansion of systematic passenger data sharing with third countries.
