Tennessee prisons chief to resign after botched Christa Pike execution
Original: Tennessee prison chief to resign after Christa Pike's failed execution, governor says https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/article
Tennessee's prison chief is to resign following the failed execution of Christa Pike, according to the governor. Pike, convicted of a 1995 murder, was the state's only female death row inmate, and the botched lethal injection has renewed scrutiny of Tennessee's capital punishment system and prompted the leadership change at the corrections department.
Why now: A failed execution leading to a senior official's resignation raises questions about how Tennessee carries out the death penalty.
