A security researcher presented work on the geopolitics of compute at the final edition of LABScon, a cybersecurity conference. The talk, "Chips on the Move: Export Controls, Evasion, and the Race for Compute," examined how strategic goals around semiconductor export controls interact with evasion efforts and the global competition for computing power. The conference's closing edition adds weight to the discussion.
Why now: Debates over chip export controls and access to computing power are a live geopolitical issue, and the conference's final edition drew attention.
