Tom Kim wins Asian Games gold, easing South Korea military duty
Original: Tom Kim takes gold at Asian Games, avoiding Korea’s military requirement
Golfer Tom Kim captured gold at the Asian Games, a result that carries weight beyond sport: under South Korean law, athletes who win gold at the games earn an exemption from mandatory military service. The 21-year-old, who plays mainly on the US PGA Tour, thus avoids the roughly two-year service requirement faced by most South Korean men.
Why now: His gold medal secures a military service exemption, a high-stakes and widely debated rule in South Korea.
