South Korean golfer Tom Kim won gold at the Asian Games, securing an exemption from South Korea's mandatory military service. The victory allows the young PGA Tour star to continue his professional career uninterrupted. The exemption rules mean all able-bodied South Korean men must serve, but athletes winning major international titles are excused, making the win significant for his golfing future.
Why now: The win spares one of golf's rising stars from nearly two years of mandatory military service that could have derailed his career.
