South Korean golfer Kim won gold at the Asian Games, a result that carries significance beyond sport: victory at the tournament grants South Korean male athletes an exemption from mandatory military service. The exemption is highly prized for athletes whose careers could otherwise be interrupted, and Kim's win is being widely reported as a major professional and personal milestone.
Why now: The Asian Games are in the news and military exemption rules make South Korean gold medallists a recurring talking point.
