Original: 'Glad it's over': Kim powers to Games gold and military exemption
South Korean athlete Kim has won gold at the Asian Games, a victory that also grants him an exemption from mandatory military service. Speaking after the win, Kim expressed relief, saying he was glad it was over. In South Korea, Games gold medals excuse men from around 18 months of conscription, making the result a matter of intense public interest.
Why now: Gold at the Asian Games grants South Korean athletes a rare exemption from compulsory military service, a widely debated perk.
