King's Caribbean tour to confront colonial past
Original: King's Caribbean tour will not shy away from 'darkest days of our past' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cqn73lr17g5e
King Charles is set to begin a tour of the Caribbean, with Buckingham Palace signalling the visit will openly address Britain's colonial history, described as the 'darkest days of our past'. The remarks come as several Commonwealth realms in the region continue debates over slavery reparations and whether to cut ties with the monarchy, making the royal trip a sensitive diplomatic moment.
Why now: Ongoing calls for slavery reparations and republicanism in Caribbean nations make royal visits there especially contested.
