The commander of the Sudanese army's 4th Infantry Division has ordered troops in the southeastern Blue Nile region to raise their combat readiness ahead of a possible offensive against rebel forces. The order, reported from Addis Ababa, signals an escalation in one of Sudan's long-running insurgencies, where fighting between the army and armed opposition has persisted despite past ceasefire efforts.
Why now: Renewed military activity in the Blue Nile raises fears of fresh fighting and displacement in an already unstable region.
