Original: Record number of proposals submitted under the European Defence Fund 2026 calls: 612 project proposals apply for the €1 billion envelope
The European Commission says a record 612 project proposals have been submitted under the 2026 calls of the European Defence Fund, competing for roughly €1 billion in EU co-financing. The number of applications is the highest since the fund was launched, reflecting the sharp rise in European interest in jointly funded defence research and capability development projects.
Why now: The surge in applications highlights growing European defence-industry activity amid heightened security concerns across the EU.
