The UK Conservative Party has pledged to build 50,000 new prison places, a commitment reported by BBC News. The promise touches on long-running concerns about prison overcrowding and capacity in England and Wales, and is likely to feed into wider debate about justice policy, sentencing and the cost of expanding the prison estate.
Why now: Prison overcrowding is a live political issue and the pledge will be scrutinised for cost and feasibility ahead of elections.
