Candidates vying for Washington state's open fourth district congressional seat met in a debate centered on immigration, inflation and Iran. The district, the most conservative in the state, rarely advances a Democrat through the top-two primary, but one did this year. That candidate says he entered the race after taking a buyout amid federal spending cuts, adding an unusual twist to the contest.

Why now: A rare Democratic advance in a heavily Republican district makes this open-seat race unusually competitive and newsworthy.
