A new in-depth study concludes that the Dutch royal house played an active role in helping the slave trade survive, and made large profits from Dutch colonial policies in past centuries. The findings add to growing scrutiny of European royal families' historical ties to slavery and are prompting debate in the Netherlands about accountability and possible redress.
Why now: The study directly implicates the Dutch monarchy in profiting from and sustaining the slave trade, a historically and politically charged finding.
