Chicago Expands Citywide Mental Health Emergency Response With Longer Hours
Original: Citywide Mental Health Emergency Service Continues Expansion With Longer Hours
A citywide mental health emergency service is continuing to expand, with longer operating hours announced as part of its rollout. The program sends trained responders to mental health crisis calls instead of police. The latest extension signals the city's effort to make non-police crisis response available to more residents for more of the day, though further details on coverage and staffing were not provided.
Why now: Cities are under public pressure to reform crisis response, and each expansion of a non-police mental health service draws attention.
