Russia retaliates after Hungary expels ten diplomats
Original: Russia retaliates after Hungary expels 10 diplomats, deepening Budapest-Moscow rift since Orbán’s ouster
Moscow has responded in kind after Hungary expelled ten Russian diplomats, in the latest deterioration of relations between Budapest and the Kremlin. The move is being read as deepening a rift between the two countries following what the report describes as Orbán's ouster from power. Diplomatic tit-for-tat expulsions between Russia and European states have become a recurring feature since the invasion of Ukraine.
Why now: A reported rupture between Russia and one of its closest European partners, under a new Hungarian government, marks a notable shift in European politics.
