The United Nations has marked the first International Day for Awareness of the Development Needs and Challenges Specific to Landlocked Developing Countries. The observance, led through the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, highlights the trade, transit and infrastructure difficulties faced by the world's 32 landlocked developing nations and calls for stronger international support.
Why now: It is the first time this new international day, created to spotlight the structural disadvantages of countries without sea access, has been observed.
