Former GOP Rep. David Rivera gets 10 years for secret Venezuela lobbying
Original: Former GOP Rep. David Rivera sentenced to 10 years for secret Venezuela lobbying
Former Florida Republican congressman David Rivera has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for acting as an unregistered foreign agent while secretly lobbying on behalf of Venezuela's government. Prosecutors said he failed to disclose paid work for Caracas, including efforts to improve relations between Venezuela and the United States. The sentence marks a dramatic fall for a one-time lawmaker and draws renewed attention to foreign lobbying enforcement.
Why now: A former US congressman receiving a decade-long prison term for covert foreign lobbying is an unusual and consequential outcome in a high-profile political corruption case.
