A new robotic hand design is drawing comparisons to Thing, the disembodied hand character from The Addams Family, after demonstrations of it moving on its own. The futuristic prosthetic-style hand scuttles and gestures without an attached arm, giving it an uncanny, lifelike quality that observers find both impressive and unsettling. The comparison has made the robot hand a talking point in discussions about advances in robotics and how eerily close machines are getting to mimicking living movement.
Why now: The uncanny, lifelike movement of an autonomous robot hand invites an irresistible pop-culture comparison to The Addams Family's Thing.
