President Trump is set to appoint Jay Clayton, the former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman, as the White House's top artificial intelligence official, according to the New York Times. The move would place a securities regulator-turned-prosecutor in charge of coordinating federal AI policy, drawing attention from both technology and government watchers.
Why now: A prominent figure from finance being handed sweeping authority over US artificial intelligence policy is a surprising and consequential appointment.
