Oregon begins culling barred owls to save spotted owls
Original: Oregon begins killing barred owls in push to save the northern spotted owl
Wildlife managers in Oregon have started killing barred owls, an invasive species from eastern North America, in an effort to protect the threatened northern spotted owl. Barred owls have outcompeted spotted owls for territory and food across Pacific Northwest forests, contributing to steep declines. The culling programme has drawn both support from conservationists and criticism from animal welfare advocates.
Why now: The controversial decision to kill one owl species to save another raises debate over wildlife management.
