Whaling meeting ends without deal on South Atlantic whale sanctuary

The International Whaling Commission has closed another meeting without agreeing to create a South Atlantic whale sanctuary, a proposal conservationists have pushed for years. The Environmental Investigation Agency reports no progress was made, frustrating campaigners who argue the reserve would protect whale populations migrating through the region. Pro-whaling nations have repeatedly blocked the measure, leaving the sanctuary proposal stalled once again.
Why now: Conservation groups are highlighting the continued failure of long-blocked whale protection efforts at the IWC.
