Israel is preparing to open a main Palestinian thoroughfare in Ramallah to Israeli settlers, a step that would bring checkpoints and gates to one of the West Bank's last areas of free Palestinian movement. Critics say the move would also restrict affordable urban growth in the city, deepening fragmentation of Palestinian life under occupation.
Why now: The plan threatens one of the last spaces of unimpeded Palestinian movement in the West Bank, raising fresh concern over settlement expansion.
