Tom Kim chases Asian Games gold and exemption from military service
Original: Tom Kim aims to clinch Asian Games title and avoid military service in South Korea https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7652
South Korean golfer Tom Kim is competing at the Asian Games with more than a medal at stake: winning gold would earn him an exemption from South Korea's mandatory military service. The 20-plus-month conscription requirement has shaped the careers of many South Korean male athletes, and exemptions are granted only for major achievements such as Asian Games gold or an Olympic medal. Golf fans are watching closely as Kim bids to secure both the title and his professional future.
Why now: The Asian Games are under way, and the golfer's bid for gold carries the unusual added stakes of avoiding mandatory military service.
