On October 2, 1968, Mexican army units surrounded a student demonstration at the Plaza of the Three Cultures in Tlatelolco, Mexico City, where some 15,000 students had gathered to protest the military occupation of the National University. Soldiers opened fire, killing and wounding dozens in what became known as the Tlatelolco Massacre, weeks before the Mexico City Olympics.
