Japan urged to welcome immigrants to fix labor shortages
Original: Japan needs immigrants to address labor shortages, but policymakers must balance tighter rules and integration requireme
An editorial in The Japan Times argues Japan must rely on immigration to counter its chronic labor shortages, but warns policymakers face a delicate balancing act. It says tighter rules and integration requirements are needed to ensure foreign workers contribute to the economy without becoming a burden. The piece reflects an ongoing national debate over how open Japan should be to foreign labor as its population shrinks and ages.
Why now: Japan's aging population and acute labor shortages keep immigration policy at the center of national debate.
