Farm Bill Expires as Congress Faces Tight Renewal Deadline
Original: Farm Bill Expires as Congress Faces Tight Deadline for Renewal
The US farm bill has expired, leaving Congress with a narrow window to pass a renewal of the sweeping legislation that governs agricultural subsidies, crop insurance and nutrition programs. Farmers and food policy advocates are watching closely, since a lapse creates uncertainty for payments and program funding while lawmakers negotiate the terms of a replacement.
Why now: The expiration of a major federal law affecting farmers and food assistance is prompting concern about what happens if Congress does not act quickly.
